“The term swiftboating is a pejorative American neologism used to describe an unfair or untrue political attack. The term is derived from the name of the organization “Swift Boat Veterans for Truth” (SBVT, later the Swift Vets and POWs for Truth) because of their widely publicized—and later discredited—campaign against 2004 U.S. presidential candidate John Kerry”
John Kerry was a decorated War Hero in Vietnam, later a conscientious objector to that war. The GOP created a fake organization to discredit his war record at the time, portraying the three time purple heart winner as a “bad soldier”. The phrase “Heroes don’t brag” was used a lot (Please note every military insignia on half the cars in America to let you know they served).
John McCain was a lifelong public servant who was shot down behind enemy lines, held prisoner and tortured which gave him life-long disabilities. He was given the opportunity to leave the POW camp because of his privilege of being an affluent son of a Navy Admiral, he refused and stayed with the others until everyone was released. He then served Congress as a Republican and when he broke with his party, fake news came out about his causing fires on an aircraft carrier and what a terrible soldier he was.
